Shedding light on load-shedding crime

How does load shedding effect crime in Krugersdorp?

Although the power may be out at businesses and homes because of load shedding, it is business as usual for criminals in Krugersdorp. Or is it?

Load shedding during the past few days has taught Krugersdorp residents to go back to their roots and enjoy the simpler things in life. Residents now are forced to enjoy dinner by candlelight, braaiing and spending some time with their neighbours.

After contacting a few local Community Policing Forums (CPF) in Krugersdorp, the news established crime is not on the rise. This, however does not mean residents can sleep with their doors unlocked at night.

Crime still is an ongoing battle in our community and residents are urged to be alert during load shedding.

“Residents of all area’s should be alert, especially during load shedding. It’s difficult for the CPF and police to spot suspects in the dark,” says Rinie Oosthuizen, spokesperson for the Sector 3 CPF.

It seems the silent nights spent in the dark proves to be an obstacle for criminals as noise can be heard from kilometres away.

Furthermore, residents who usually are locked safely in their homes and are comfortable in front of their television sets, now enjoy the night sky outside in their yards, creating visibility in the neighbourhoods.

“Windows and gates always should be secured and locked to prevent criminals from gaining access to your home, especially during load shedding,” advised Leon Erhke, CPF chairperson.

He also advised residents to create visibility that occupants are at home to scare off lurking criminals.
