Mother dismisses rumours about daughter arrested in Japan
Reports of Marilyn Massyn's arrest in Japan in November 2014 allegedly were false.
On 21 November 2014, the News along with many other daily newspapers reported that Marilyn Massyn, a Krugersdorp resident, was found and arrested in Japan after being reported missing a few days earlier.
According to Angie Massyn, Marilyn’s mother, these reports were false.
When the News again asked Massyn for comment on her daughter’s situation she angrily refused.
“Everything the media had said, was incorrect – irrespective of what I had told the reporters that phoned me,” said Massyn.
Massyn said Marilyn’s friends and family know the truth.
The News reported in November 2014 that there has been no confirmation that the 36-year-old Marilyn indeed was arrested for being in possession of drugs.
The News spoke to Nelson Kgwete of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation who said there was no new information about Massyn’s situation in Japan, but claimed he was in constant contact with Marilyn’s family.
However, Massyn insisted that they had no contact with Kgwete and what he said was “absolutely incorrect”.
Massyn explained that Marilyn’s son was extremely upset when he read the article on his mother’s arrest in Japan, knowing it was false.
Kgwete could confirm her arrest only and that any new information would be communicated to the media as soon as it became available – which evidently did not happen.
When contacted again, Kgwete said he would enquire about Marilyn with his colleague in Japan. The News has yet to receive a response.
The News will keep its readers updated if any new information comes to light.
