Self defence is a life line
Communities are being mobilised with self defence tips since the police and LifeLine is taking a stance against abuse and violence.
Say no to rape, violence and abuse is the message being delivered in Magaliesburg by LifeLine and its partners with their special holiday program.
LifeLine has taken hands with the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS), Mogale City Local Municipality and Magalies Secondary School for an in-dept community outreach program.
The program, which is due to kick off next week, aims to educated children and parents about the importance of communication.
A special booklet by the name of FunDza – Nowhere to hide, has been handed out to both the children and parents involved to study for the program, which is a sister project for the Thursdays in Black Campaign.
The subjects in the booklet will then be discussed in various circles which will include sensitive subjects like the different types of abuse, sex, rape, dating and bullying.
It is believed the Magaliesburg area has been experiencing more cases of abuse, drugs and prostitution lately.
The outreach program also aims to help the community mobilise support groups and forums which will assist the community with its challenges of abuse.
Councillors and police representatives will be at the program during the school holiday to assist victims should they need to come forward.
Karina Swart, Director of LifeLine said this initiative will be the first of many to come in the whole West Rand.
The stakeholders of the outreach program recently presented self defence classes in both Magaliesburg and the Muldersdrift area, where Captain Paula Terblance along with Lieutenant Peet du Toit demonstrated the different defence tactics and tips on how to be safe.
The community can play their part and support the cause by purchasing a Thursdays in Black T-shirt from LifeLine.
