Two stand on for IFP councillor’s murder

The two brothers are alleged to have shot and killed IFP proportional representative councillor Patrick Ngubane.

Two men accused of shooting and killing an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillor appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder.

Two brothers aged 32 and 28 appeared before magistrate Stanley Mkhari in Kagiso Regional Court 2 on charges of murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The two brothers are alleged to have shot and killed IFP proportional representative councillor Patrick Ngubane on 19 July 2014 at the Kagiso Hostel in Block H. Their case was postponed to 8 July for them to plea and they will remain in custody.

The neatly dressed brothers appeared calm in the dock and were able to greet their family members. They were arrested last year in Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal, after the police had received a tip-off about their whereabouts.

It is alleged that on the day Ngubane was killed, he had organised a thanksgiving ceremony for members of the IFP. The witness who refused to be named, said Ngubane had gone out to buy beer when the suspects arrived at the party, kicked the food and swore at the people.

The witness said members of the IFP called Ngubane on his cellphone and informed him about the incident. When Ngubane arrived, the two suspects fired shots at him but missed.

He ran for cover to a nearby room, but they fired another shot through the door. The suspects forced their way into the room where Ngubane was hiding and fired more shots, hitting him in the forehead and chest. He was certified dead at the scene.

The two suspects then fled the scene on foot.
