Police clean out accident scene

Tons of cargo were allegedly stolen by police after two trucks collided on the road of death.

Following a collision by two trucks on the R24, aptly named the road of death, on 11 April, a volunteer’s dash-cam caught police officers from all over Krugersdorp allegedly stealing from the scene.

The Emergency Management Services (EMS) and a disaster clean-up team were called out at 8.15pm to attend to the injured drivers shortly after the accident.

Ollie Olivier along with others from Magaliesburg found a truck from Botswana overturned on the R24 which collided with another tanker from a SA fuel distribution company.

The team then proceeded to assist the drivers who were slightly injured.

Volunteers were instructed to close off the roads on both sides to prevent any further collisions as the accident happened on a blind corner and the truck’s load was scattered along the road.

The scene was then cordoned off as bystanders started gathering around the scene at which point the first Magaliesburg police patrol vehicle arrived.

After the patients were rushed off to hospital one of the Magaliesburg police officers instructed the members of the Magaliesburg Disaster Management Support to leave the scene at once with no explanation.

It is believed the same officer who instructed the volunteers to leave the scene broke the cordon open and let member of the public into the scene to take the cargo.

Olivier and other volunteers removed themselves from the chaos and moved to save distance as they watched police vehicles from Magaliesburg, Hekpoort, Boons, Tarlton and Krugersdorp load their vans full with the help of the bystanders.

“The following morning I reported this incident to the Commander of Magaliesburg police, where I noticed that the police only handed in somewhat 50 boxes of food at the station. Where did the rest of the 36 ton load disappear to which was meant to be transported to Botswana?” asked Olivier.

The News is awaiting footage of the scene to prove the allegations of the many eyewitnesses, as well as police comment.
