[PHOTOS] Nurses motivated at Sterkfontein

Nurses attended the special event in a bid to make them feel more motivated.

International Nurses Day on 12 May is held annually as a day where nurses who go the extra mile in their career are thanked and appreciated.

At Sterkfontein Hospital, who boasts with 353 nursing staff, 100 nurses attended this special event in a bid to make them feel motivated again since they often feel fatigued, burnt out, have low morale and negative attitudes.

And the nursing diagnosis to ‘treat’ this ‘suffering’ was the topic of the day: how can a nurse of today better a nurse of yesterday?

Nurse Mariska Oosthuizen-van Tonder, one of the organisers, said it is the hospital’s first Nurses Day in years.

“I just felt it is time to have such a day as some of the staff feel demotivated. I wanted to have this day so that they can feel special and know their hard work is seen.”

She organised this day together with assistant manager Lebohang Dhlamini.

The ‘treatment’ came in the form of speakers such as Christa Chidrawi, a former nurse at the hospital who is retired from her profession as the director of Life Line in Johannesburg, and Annemie Greeff who works as a nursing attorney at the Netcare-group. Annemie shared her expert knowledge on how to avoid litigations.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Jimmy Mapunya, a nurse himself, also said a few words and explained the importance of celebrating this day, which is also commemorating the world-famous nurse Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

As soon as everyone gained some new insight into their profession some awards and certificates were handed out by assistant manager Herbert Shuping to three nurses that the Nursing Management had identified as hard working during the past year.

But no one left empty handed. Several lucky draws were done and the celebrations ended with laughs and the nurses’ pledge of service.

The day was sponsored by Bio-Oil who gave every nurse a goodie bag and Salco that sponsored gifts for the awards.
