Mogale City and their meter readers

Billed on average water or electricity consumption? Here’s why.

If your meter is not read monthly, you will be billed on average consumption, according to Mogale City Local Municipality.

The municipality released a monthly newsletter Dikgang Isa Mogale that explains what they are doing – from a municipal point of view.

In their April newsletter they wrote about the importance of meters being read.

Meter readers need to gain access to residents’ properties to take their specific water and electricity readings.

“We send out meter readers to consumers across town to avoid estimations and capturing incorrect information,” said Sharon Phokantsi, a Mogale City meter reader.

Phokantsi said they have difficulty gaining access to properties owing to owners not allowing them entry.

“Some customers refuse meter readers entry to their property, therefore they are billed on average consumption.”

When the News asked residents about meter readers, some said they have not seen a meter reader for years while others claimed they see them monthly.

“I think the meter readers are doing a great job. My monthly bill can be as much as R500 less when they read my meter,” said Estel Oosthuizen from Krugersdorp.

Charl Bothma from Kenmare explained he takes photos of his meter reading because he has not seen a meter reader for more than two years.

“I give the municipality proof of the readings so they do not bill me on average consumption,” he said.

Gavin Jansen van Vuuren from Mindalore said a meter reader comes to take readings every month.

“He even whistles to let us know he is in the area. He normally take the readings on the third of each month.”

According to the Dikgang Isa Mogale it is to the benefit of residents to allow meter readers access to their properties.
