Local artists painting past their mental disabilities, exhibit their art for the first time.

15 artists aged 21 to 28 from Thusong Centre for the Mentally Challenged are exhibiting their artwork at the Mogale City Museum.
“Museums are engaging more with the community through exhibitions like these,” said Godfrey Naledzani, Mogale City Department of Heritage, Arts and Culture specialist.
“This is an opportunity for these up-and-coming artists to get exposure in their community.”
Alf Mosenye from Mogale City’s Art Calabash Project inspires these young artists by providing art classes twice a week at the centre.
Dolly Mogepi, Thusong Centre’s project manager, said the art students first were introduced to clay work two years ago. Now they can paint, draw and sculpt.
“We try to provide members with mental disabilities to as many activities as possible. Many of them are extremely good working with their hands,” Dolly said.
You can see and purchase the artworks at Mogale City Museum until the end of July. All the proceeds will go to Thusong Centre for the Mentally Disabled.
