Pharmacist says goodbye after 43 service years
Cliff Erasmus, a well-known Krugersdorp pharmacist will be bidding Krugersdorp farewell at the end of the month.
Tablets, syrup, nasal spray and his white pharmacists jacket will be put to rest – for now.
After serving the Krugersdorp community for over 43 years Cliff Erasmus, the trusted pharmacist at the Local Choice Sack’s Pharmacy in Fourth Street, Krugersdorp North will be retiring at the end of this month.
“He will truly be missed. He was a gentleman and a dedicated worker that was loved by all,” said his employer Jeff Sack.
Cliff took the News down memory lane explaining how he always wanted to follow a career in the medical field but ultimately wanted to be a pharmacist.
This is why he enrolled for the Pharmacists degree at the Witwatersrand Technikon College in the late 1960s.
After obtaining his qualification he joined the Ansfrere Pharmacy in Discovery in 1973 before he was transferred to the Adcock’s Pharmacy in Ockerse Street where he remained in this position for thirty years.
“I then joined Sack’s Pharmacy in Fourth Street ten years ago where I maintained the position as pharmacist until my retirement.”
Cliff said he was fortunate enough to have been able to render a service to three and even four generations of the same family and to have experienced great progress and change in the pharmaceutical field.
Some of the changes were in the form of technological advancements.
“At the beginning each prescription was hand written as there was no computer programmes.”
He said there were also laughable moments where he had to keep in his laugh when customers would have the weirdest names and pronunciations for products.
“I would burst out laughing when I retell this experience to some of my colleagues and customers which have become like friends.”
As a pharmacist he has learnt that people confide a lot into pharmacists and to them that is the reason why he chose this career.
“There is a lot of interaction with people and it is a way to help others and to give them some sort of support.
“As I retire and will be relocating to Pretoria to live with my daughter Lauren and son Cuan, I leave with many good memories and hope that my input has in some way made a positive difference to the health of Krugersdorp’s residents.”
Cliff said he won’t be leaving the pharmaceutical field entirely and will from time to time still avail himself for locum work.
“My loss is the next person’s gain as he will be an asset where ever he go to,” Jeff said.
