Freemasons: making good men better

The Krugersdorp Freemasons invited the News to their Lodge in the Krugersdorp CBD.

For the first time in the history of Krugersdorp’s Freemasons the press was invited to see what this fraternal organisation is about.

The News journalist arrived at the Krugersdorp Lodge in the CBD where he met Koos Breet, standing guard at the entrance of the lodge.

His job is to guard the door against unqualified, malicious or simply curious people.

The journalist as well as female family members were granted an opportunity to attend the memorial service of one of their members who had passed. It was surprising to see that it was just like any other memorial service.

Johan Britz, the Presiding Master for the Lodge of the Morning explained to the News that they are not a religion and are not practising any Satanistic acts.

“People don’t know what is happening in the lodge. Although we believe in a higher power and we open our meetings with prayer and read from the Bible, our firm belief lies with the fact that no one is above another.”

Johan said although the Freemasons are exclusively for men only, they do have women Masonries but they are not allowed inside the lodge.

“The Freemasons are all about turning a good man into a better man.”

Krugersdorp’s Lodge started in the 1960s when the United Grand Lodge of South Africa was formed from the United Grand Lodge of the Netherlands, which was established in South Africa in 1892.

“Our aim is to work on disciplining men and to form a brotherhood. It is all about creating better men in our society.”
