Be fire smart this Winter, says Harry
With load shedding more people are using candles, gas cookers and lighting fires in their homes which makes fires safety even more important.
As the Highveld gets drier during the Winter months, fires become more and more of an issue.
“Besides the obvious danger to humans and animals, fires also damage our environment so it’s important that every one of us do our bit to help prevent fires,” says Harry the Hominid, Maropeng’s spokeshominid.
He adds that with load shedding more people are using candles, gas cookers and lighting fires in their homes which makes fires safety even more important.

The first thing Harry says you need to remember is to ask a parent or another adult to light a candle or fire for you. “Don’t do it yourself and don’t play with matches or lighters,” he says.
Never leave candles or fires burning when no one is around, he reminds. “Rather put out the flames before leaving. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
Harry also says that you should ask your parents where the fire extinguisher is and, if you are old enough, show you how to use it.

“If you see anyone throwing a cigarette butt on the ground, make sure it is safely put out. A good squish under your shoe will do the trick!” he says.
Lastly Harry says it’s important to keep the telephone numbers of your nearest fire station next to your phone. “Ask an adult to show you where the number is and how to call the fire station if you need too. Let’s all work together to stop fires this Winter,” he says.
