Crime spike in Rangeview complexes

Is living in a secure complex really safer?

Residents of complexes in Rangeview are warned to be vigilant when entering and exiting their units.

Attempted break-ins and armed robberies are among the crimes that are threatening the safety of these residents.

A concerned resident contacted the News to warn other complex residents to always ensure the electric gates closes when leaving your premises.

Last week the resident noticed his gate not closing and found a piece of insulation tape covering the eye of the motor.

“We often find security while living behind high walls with electric fencing and electronic gates with remote control access, but this doesn’t seem to be a barrier for criminals who employ a number of techniques to gain access to complexes,” reads a warning statement by Stephanie Clark from the Sector 7 Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Sector 7 state that recent police crime statistics show that house robberies on the whole have increased both in free-standing homes, as well as homes in supposedly secure estates and complexes.

Homeowners are urged to take their safety and security into their own hands, whether they live within a complex or not.

This means staying alert at all times and employing basic security tactics and principles, and maintaining a sense of neighbourliness and community within the complex.

Residents should never buzz a visitor in unless they know exactly who they are. Sector 7 also advises not to leave the house doors unlocked or open even if you live in a secure complex.
