Robbers target elderly women

Two women were robbed of their valuable possessions after their home was broken into in broad daylight.

“They took all our jewelery and both televisions. But thank goodness we were not hurt.”

Margaret Zwanepoel has been the owner of her Noordheuwel home for 17 years, and this was the first time her house and the flatlet were broken into.

On 4 August around 1pm robbers broke into the two buildings when both Margaret and her friend, and lessee of the flatlet, Anna Bester left to run some errands. Margaret said her neighbours were home when they broke in.

Anna came home around 2pm and found the electric gate was halfway open. Her cupboards were emptied and all her jewelery was taken along with the flat screen television.

“It was forcibly removed from its hinges on the wall. A piece of the back of the TV was left behind,” Anna explained.

When they broke into the main house, they took Margaret’s jewelery, TV, a toolbox and she is still finding missing items days later.

“I just found that they even took a kilogram of breakfast cornflakes,” Margaret said.

What was significant to both Margaret and Anna is the way their valuables were taken.

“It is as if they knew exactly what they wanted to take when they entered.”

The police are currently investigating the crime. Margaret added that the police officers said they could not understand how the suspects managed to break the door handles.

“We are just thankful our dogs were not hurt and that we were not at home. We also want to thank the police for their diligent work and the fact that they were so professional.”
