Boy, 2, declared dead at pharmacy
Pharmacy staff are shocked as a toddler is declared dead at the clinic.
A two-year-old boy was declared dead at Sacks Pharmacy in Krugersdorp North last week.
The toddler’s emotional parents rushed him to the pharmacy early on Monday 21 September, desperately seeking help.
“My child needs help,” the mother screamed as they entered the pharmacy.
Pharmacy staff immediately took the toddler to the nurse on duty who tried to resuscitate him and gave him oxygen, but it was too late.
Paramedics arrived at the pharmacy shortly after. They declared the boy dead at around 10am.
The pharmacy staff told the News the parents took the toddler to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital the previous day after he had started vomiting over the weekend.
It is believed at around 10pm on the Saturday the boy started vomiting and showing signs of diarrhoea. The parents then rushed him to hospital.
They allegedly waited from around midnight until 4am on the Sunday morning before the toddler was examined and treated.
The parents told staff at the pharmacy the hospital staff simply pulled up the little boy’s shirt and sent him home with some Panado and an oral rehydration solution.
The family refused to speak to the News regarding the incident. However, staff members of the pharmacy said patients often seek help at the pharmacy owing to poor service at hospitals.
Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Department of Health said, “We wish to convey our condolences to the Khumalo family during this time of grief. According to our information a family member brought the patient to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital on 20 September as he was vomiting and had diarrhoea. The patient was assessed and there were no signs of dehydration. After assessment the patient was discharged and given medication to take home. The family was advised to bring back the patient immediately should they notice his condition is deteriorating. Our quality assurance directorate has tried to get in touch with the Khumalo family to get their side of the story, which would inform us what redress action should be taken. The hospital will continue engaging with the family for the redress process.”
