Police attacked by angry community members
Police flee by foot after angry community members attack officals with stones and beer bottles.
Members of the Muldersdrift police came under attack after responding to a domestic violence complaint.
The sector policing members reacted to a call-out in the Ruimsig Informal Settlement in Muldersdrift when they came under attack of the people they were mandated to protect on 19 September.
“The police were in the presence of the victim who pointed out the suspect. The members approached the suspect and informed him that he is being arrested for a domestic violence incident. The suspect resisted arrest and the community members in the vicinity then surrounded the patrol vehicle, refusing the members to arrest the suspect and to drive away,” comments Randfontein Police Communication and Liason Officer, Captain Appel Ernst .
Next the community members then started attacking the police officials, throwing stones and beer bottles towards them.
Since the officers feared for their lives they had no option but to flee the scene by foot.
The officers then called for backup and when more manpower arrived they proceeded back to the abandoned sector vehicle.
On arrival at the scene police found their vehicle badly damaged by the unruly crowd.
The windows and mirrors were broken and the vehicle had numerous deep dents which were caused by stones and bricks.
The Station Commander, Lt Colonel Seabi was relieved that the members were not seriously injured during the incident.
“In September, the community marched to the Muldersdrift station and a memorandum condemning attacks of police officers and police killings were handed over. And then, just hours later, our police members are under attack, running for their lives. This is a very unfortunate event,” stressed Lieutenant Colonel Seabi.
