Peaceful march against crime
Community breaks the silence about crime in a peaceful march.
The communities of Hekpoort and Muldersdrift said they want peace when they marched to their local police stations recently. Members of both communities met early on 19 September to march peacefully to get the message across about crime in the area.
At the Hekpoort Police Station, the group of marchers led by local ANC chairperson Shane Moilwanyane handed over a memorandum to station commander Captain Zwane.
The message of the peaceful march focused on supporting anti-drug campaigns, and awareness about police killings and brutal attacks in the community.
“Captain Zwane welcomed the memorandum, and also reminded the community to continued working with the police because more than 90 per cent of the suspects arrested are through information provided by the community,” Constable Gloria Maswanganye, Hekpoort Police spokesperson said.
On the same day members of the Muldersdrift community marched peacefully from the corner of Beyers Naude Drive and Drift Boulevard to Muldersdrift Police Station to hand over a memorandum pertaining to the abuse of and dealing in drugs, alcohol abuse and a cry to stop the killing of police officers.
The memorandum was handed over to Muldersdrift Police Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel KD Seabi who signed it and promised to hand it over to the highest authority.
Members of the Plot 89 community marched to Alcida shopping centre where they met councillor Osbon Ramadi who signed their memorandum.
“The partnership between police and members of the public is appreciated. Police also appreciate the community standing together firmly against policing killings and criminality around the country,” commented Warrant Officer Hitler Ngwenya, Muldersdrift Police spokesperson.
