[PHOTOS] Life’s a breeze for these rescued dogs

About 45 huskies call a local shelter their home. You can help them find their forever homes.

With her blue eyes sparkling and tail wagging, Sheila, a husky is about to be adopted from Husky Heaven Rescue in Oatlands.

Sheila is one of 45 dogs, mostly huskies, that call the Husky Heaven Rescue at 23 Frans Korb Street their home.

Brenda Meyer, founder and owner of the centre, started the project last year in March.

“I saw many husky dogs walking the streets, forgotten and abandoned. I needed to do something,” Brenda told the News at the centre’s Spring Day Festival in September.

The Spring Day Festival brought dog lovers together in support of the centre.

“We want people to know we are here and we aim to help animals in this community and beyond,” Brenda said.

At the centre there are three 30 by 60 metre running grounds, each with a dipping pool in which they can cool off. Their 10 by 10 metre kennels each accommodates a maximum of two dogs, each with a mini dipping pool and an elevated doghouse. The property owner and site manager, Lianne Dove, makes sure the dogs’ tummies are full every day.

“Some mornings they eat pellets and occasionally I cook for them,” she explained.

As the dogs lay in the shade, taking naps, one can agree they are indeed in heaven.

Lianne said the husky breed needs a lot of attention. These dogs need to be kept busy and be given enough space to move around.

“Sometimes husky owners don’t understand this, which is why the dogs end up on the street,” she said.

But the centre urgently needs support in order to keep the animals’ life a breeze.

“The veterinary bills are the most difficult to keep up with,” Lianne explained.
