Man crushed to death in major factory accident

A helicopter airlifted one man to hospital while another was declared dead on scene.

A thick blanket of sadness covered the scene of a major factory accident yesterday (8 October) afternoon.

One man was injured critically and airlifted to hospital by a Netcare 911 helicopter and another was declared dead on scene.

When the News arrived at the scene, the deceased’s body already had been moved to the state mortuary vehicle and Kagiso Police were investigating the scene.

According to bystanders, the deceased and the injured were working on a truck’s trailer when the structure supporting it failed and caused the trailer to fall onto the two workers.

One of them was crushed to death and the other injured critically and airlifted to hospital.

The hydraulic hoist system then allegedly kicked in and lifted the trailer from the workers.

“The deceased’s internal organs were damaged severely and the other worker’s injuries were very critical,” said Chris Botha, Netcare 911 public relations manager for the West Rand.

The News expresses its condolences to everybody affected by the tragedy.
