Happy healthy days thanks to campaign

The Rotary Family Health Days campaign hit Rietvallei and helped many women, men and children.

From TB screenings to dental checks, the Krugersdorp Rotarians put health first during this year’s annual Rotary Family Health Days campaign.

The third annual Rotary Family Health Days campaign made the men, women and children of Rietvallei aware of their medical status and even went as far as helping and referring them, for free.

“We came to Rietvallei because the area is not serviced medically,” Heather Sprag, Rotarian secretary told the News.

The mobile health clinic was set up from 7 to 9 October in the dusty and windy taxi rank. But all who came for help, were serviced. Doctor David Jankelowitz volunteered his time as a dentist for the third time.

“I check the general state of patient’s teeth and do free referrals if they need any extra medical attention,” he said.

Over the course of the three days, hundreds of residents took advantage of the check-ups. But Heather said there were a lot more women and children at the clinic than men and far more children than adults.

The Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, invited all community members in South Africa to attend the Rotary Family Health Days campaigns that were held in all nine provinces at 120 sites.

The campaign is in partnership with Rotarians in South Africa, President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar), MTN SA Foundation, the South African Broadcasting Corporation and Caxton.

This event drove the Department of Heath’s efforts for integrated mass health screenings and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Residents had access to free tuberculosis screenings and testings, HIV counselling and testing, Vitamin A supplementation and healthy lifestyle information, immunisations, health screenings such as checking blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and much more.
