‘We want the public to know’

Police officers go beyond the call of duty to help the people they serve.

They not only act upon crime, they also try to prevent it.

The Tarlton police station ran a crime awareness campaign on Saturday 17 October at Smokedown Informal Settlement and as part of the activities planned, the police teamed up against local team, Drift Aces, and played a friendly game of soccer.

“The community team won, but I think the police also won with their efforts to inform the community about crime prevention,” Constable Lucky Matome, police spokesperson, said.

It was not all about soccer, the community was also informed about crime prevention.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety in partnership with Tarlton police then did it again the following Tuesday 20 October.

Ndivhuho Gadisi, the department’s communications officer said that a crime awareness road show was conducted in Tarlton and surrounding areas.

“The purpose of the road show is to create awareness and educate the community on issues of safety. The focus will be on armed robberies, common assault and substance abuse which are prevalent in the area,” Gadisi said.

Areas like Serobe informal settlement, Norman informal settlement and Smokedown are some of the areas that are most riddled with these crimes.
