Residents burn tyres because Mayor a no-show

Informal settlers were up in arms after the Mayor failed to show up for a meeting about service delivery.

Big truck tyres, broken glass bottles and large rocks littered Tom Muller Street in West Village this Saturday after an angry mob expressed their disgust in the Mayor’s no-shown at an arranged meeting.

At around 1pm on Saturday 14 November, Makhulugama Informal Settlement residents waited for the Executive Mayor of Mogale City Local Municipality, Calvin Koketso Seerane, to address them about the service delivery, or lack thereof, in West Village and specifically Makhulugama. Makhulugama is an informal settlement bordering West Village.

Soon, informal settlers were up in arms when the Mayor failed to show up for their meeting. He sent representatives instead.

“This comes after we gave over a memorandum to the him a few weeks ago about the service delivery issues we have in the area,” West Village resident and community leader, John Barnardt told the News.

“There is a lack of proper sanitation facilities in the settlement and the roads in West Village are not tarred properly,” he said.

John said that West Village is like a forgotten community that no one wants to do anything about.

According to Sector 5 Community Policing Forum (CPF), Tom Muller Street had to be cut off by them and police officers so that the angry crowd could be contained. Large rocks, burning tyres and broken glass scattered across the entire stretch of the road, prohibited drivers to use the road for the most part of the day.

But CPF members soon cleared the road and most of the broken glass.
