Rent a Husky enclosure for an evening

A Sleepathon in aid of our furry friends will benefit a special NPO.

On 28 November Husky Rescue South Africa (HRSA) will host its very first Sleepathon at the Husky Haven care facility in Lanseria.

According to Joanne van Niekerk, Founder of HRSA, “The Haven is home to 50 Nordic breed dogs and has 25 kennel runs. We strive to keep the runs as homely as possible but at the end of the day, our dogs deserve so much more. Through the ‘Rent-a-Run’ Sleepathon we hope to find many of our special dogs a loving, forever home as well as raise some much-needed funds for our shelter.”

Local businesses have come on board to support this initiative. Dowry Security has donated R2 500 and two security guards will patrol the Haven while corporates and husky enthusiasts stay over in the enclosures they have “rented” for the evening. Other local businesses include International Training Academy, Silverstar and Minute Man Press Krugersdorp who have not only donated R2 500 but both owners are staying over for the night and have sponsored additional artwork and stationary for the event.

All proceeds will go towards the treatment and rehabilitation of the dogs at the Haven.

“We simply cannot continue to do the work that we do without the help of our corporate supporters and volunteers. This time of year is particularly difficult as we often have an influx of dogs and not enough resources – the Sleepathon could not have come at a better time,” Joanne said.

HRSA has been rescuing and rehabilitating Nordic Breeds of Dogs for over 20 years. Their care facility, Husky Haven provides a refuge for abused and abandoned dogs until they are able to find their forever homes.

A dedicated team manages adoption and home checks to ensure that these often misunderstood breeds are placed in an environment that understands their needs and will ultimately become their forever home. For those who cannot commit to the cost of having their own dog the organisation runs a foster care programme where dogs who do not respond well to living in a run are placed in a home at the cost of Husky Rescue.

Husky Rescue is a registered non-profit organisation, and if you would like to participate in the Sleepathon or help the rescue, contact 082 851 9576.
