Man stuck under a tree after lightning struck

A man is lucky to be alive after Mother Nature leaves a path of destruction.

Johan Havenga is lucky to be alive after lightning hit a tree yesterday afternoon causing it to fall on top of him.

Havenga, who works at family owned nursery, was helping a client when lightning hit a blue gum tree that is approximately 35m tall just before 4pm.

He was walking to the back when branches of the tree fell onto the net covering the plants and landed on top of him.

Owners of the nursery Madelein and Robert Botha quickly ran outside to find Havenga yelling for help while being completely covered under tree branches.

“Help, help I am stuck,” Havenga shouted.

Quickly Botha called Sector 5 Community Policing Forum for backup and gathered the staff to help free Havenga.

Luckily Havenga was freed with only a few scratches and bruises from the incident.

“When the lightning hit, I covered my ears for the loud noise, and the next moment branches came tumbling down on top of me,” Havenga explained.

The owners are not only grateful that Havenga walked away from the incident, but also that the tree did not fall on their house.

“Thank you so much to friends and family who rushed to the nursery to come and help us. I am so grateful that no-one got seriously injured,” Madelein said.
