Husky Sleepathon raises over R55 000.
After sleeping in a kennel, charity won with R55 000.
Would you sleep in a kennel? Many did, and raised over R55 000 while doing so.
On 28 November Husky Rescue South Africa (HRSA) hosted its very first Sleepathon at the Husky Haven care facility in Lanseria. More than R55 000 was raised for the 50 Nordic breeds of dogs that live there.
According to Dominique Strydom, Husky Rescue Volunteer and Sleepathon organiser: “Fifteen kennel runs were rented out to corporates including FNB, Silverstar Casino, Pitney Bowes, Mutt Mix, International Training Academy, Minuteman Press, GI Consulting and Dowry Security. Great fun was the order of the day(night), especially the shelter dogs who thoroughly enjoyed the human interaction and companionship.”
Nikki Pretorius, also a volunteer organiser explained that through the Sleepathon they hoped to find these incredible dogs a loving home.
“Siberian huskies are often chosen as a family pet based on their gorgeous blue eyes and fluffy coats. Many new owners know very little about this breed and as the puppy grows into an adolescent dog, owners are unable to understand and cope with their very specific requirements. This sometimes results in callous abuse, neglect and abandonment. Despite the traumatic experiences that some of these dogs have had, most develop into loving family pets with big, energetic personalities,” she said.
Joanne van Niekerk, Founder of HRSA and Haven Manager concluded: “We could not have asked for better support from our loyal Husky Rescue supporters and the very generous corporate companies that threw themselves – heart and soul – into our event. We thank you and appreciate your assistance.”
