Generous local thanked by the Pope

This 92-year-old is still giving a helping hand.

Even the Pope has recognised this local’s charitable endeavours and awarded him with a papal medal.

In November at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Mick Dennehy received the Benemerenti Papal Medal. This medal is an honour awarded by the Pope to members of the clergy and church members for service to the Catholic Church.

At the 9.30am Mass, Mick was recognised for his lifetime’s work for elderly residents in helping them obtain their compensation and pension funds.”He still fights for their welfare rights,” Mick’s friend, Monica Culhane, told the News.

“In doing this, he has gone as far as contacting the ministers of the department of labour and welfare personally,” she said.

Sometimes these cases took years of follow-ups, but Mick never gave up before the applicants got “what they deserved”.

To Mick he is just doing what every Christian should be doing.

The 92-year-old plans on continuing his work for the needy on the West Rand until his last breath.
