Police are warning residents to be vigilant when driving after police noticed a rise in hijacking incidents.
Kagiso Police received more than four complaints last month where owners of light duty vehicles or trucks are being hijacked or robbed of their vehicle under false pretenses.
The warning follows the latest incident where a victim was robbed at gun pointed before the suspect fled with his vehicle.
“The complainant was in the Johannesburg CBD with his white Nissan bakkie waiting for anyone who might need his services to transport or deliver their goods, when he was approached by two unknown women and a man who wanted to be transported to Glenvista on 29 January,” Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.
The suspects then directed the victim to Swanieville in Kagiso where they asked him to pick up another two unknown men.
He was told that two men were going to assist them when loading their furniture.
“They drove a few metres into an open space when suddenly one of the suspects drew a firearm and ordered the complainant to stop. Another suspect drew a knife while they pulled him out of his vehicle.”
The armed suspects searched the victim and took his cash and two cell phones before driving off in his Nissan bakkie with registration number LRF 926 GP.
“We would like to warn people to more cautious in this kind of business. Make sure that you assist people you know and their residential address. Transporting people you do not know to even a destination you are not familiar with can be risky and dangerous,” Sibiya concluded.
