Litter, low maintenance cause of water damage

The major damages after yet another storm leaves Krugersdorp blaming the local municipality.

The immense water damage, particularly in the western parts of town, was due to lack of maintained storm drains, said Annette Fourie, DA councillor and member of the Mogale City Infrastructure portfolio.

A second destructive storm hit Krugersdorp on 5 February, leaving immense water damage across the western parts of town. Numerous residents took to Facebook to show how their walls fell over and their furniture floated in the water.

Fourie said the lack of maintenance on storm drains, heavy vehicles and litter are to blame for the water overflow.

“Some storm drains are blocked with things like leaves and sand or litter on the streets,” she said.

Many residents blame the municipality for their losses.

Annemerie Greeff, a Krugersdorp West resident whose home was flooded, said the storm drain opposite her house was blocked and the water pushed up until you no longer could tell the road from the pavement.

Fourie said she already has mentioned the issue at the Infrastructure portfolio meeting, but will highlight it again during the upcoming council meeting.

“We as a community should also stand together and help keep the streets clean. If we don’t, we can expect more damage in the next storm.”
