Bakkie driver arrested for DUI

The driver of the bakkie who crashed into the now deceased Pieter-Schalk Grobbelaar can also add culpable homicide to his list of charges.

A case of culpable homicide is now being investigated by the Krugersdorp Police following the death of 17-year-old Pieter-Schalk Grobbelaar.

The investigation follows after Grobbelaar passed away in hospital around two hours after the driver of a bakkie crashed into him while he was riding his motorcycle.

“The suspect was also arrested and detained for driving under the influence of alcohol and for reckless/ negligent driving on the day,” Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, said.

The police report suggested that the driver was also speeding at the time of the accident.

Furthermore an eyewitness on the scene told the News that he was sitting inside a residence on Luipaard Steet when he heard the impact of the accident and the sound of the motorcycle screeching down the road.

He then quickly put on his shoes and ran outside to investigate when he saw the young man lying injured in the street.

According to the eyewitness, local Community Policing Forum (CPF) patrollers were the first to arrive on the scene attending to the seriously injured young man.

“It was amazing to see the CPF members, some laying on the ground, tend to the young man. They were very fast and helpful,” the eyewitness told the News.

Grobbelaar passed away after he was airlifted to hospital in a severely critical state with a major head injury, a chest injury and a fracture to the top of his leg.
