Petrol to increase by nearly 90 cents

Petrol, diesel, paraffin and liquid petroleum prices will increase.

It’s that time again. When cars line up at the filling station before midnight strikes and the petrol retail price increases by 86 cents per litre for 93 octane and 88 cents per litre for 95 octane tomorrow.

The Department of Energy added that diesel will increase with 95,70 cents a litre. The price of illuminating paraffin will also increase with 76 cents per litre and liquid petroleum gas with 110 cents per kilogram.

In a poll on Facebook, Krugersdorpers reacted mostly with dissatisfaction with the increase.

Helen Withinshaw-Stocker commented that the increase will contribute to food inflation.

“No wonder Pravin [Gordhan, Minister of Finance] managed to balance the budget with all the extra income coming from the petrol increase,” she said.

Janine Viljoen, the News’ editor, said she is not happy.

“When petrol goes up, everything else will also go up,” she said.

Celia Thomas commented by asking whether the increase will “help Zuma pay back the money?”

The Automobile Association (AA) said late last month that although the rand-dollar exchange rate has firmed in the rand’s favour over the past few weeks‚ “the strengthening of international petroleum product rises has outstripped the rand’s gains”.

The AA added that if oil prices continue to climb‚ South African motorists can expect substantial fuel price increases.
