‘I could have been killed at the hospital’
After the wheels were stolen off her car at the hospital, Elsabe feels she could have been killed and no one would have noticed.
Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital will soon have newly allocated parking space after a woman’s car’s wheels were stolen while she was inside the hospital.
On 21 March between 8pm and 10pm, Elsabe Scheepers, a pensioner, said she was forced to park in a dark area where no lighting is provided when she visited the hospital with family members.
“There is parking closer to the hospital entrance, but that is only for employees,” she said.
Elsabe feels that if the wheels were stolen without anyone noticing, she could have been raped or killed as well.
Elsabe’s daughter, Jenny Scheepers, told the News they have notified the police about the incident and the case is being investigated.
“The damages amounted to R24 000 and the family now has to come up with the R4 000 excess. We feel the hospital is liable for the damages,” she said.
Jenny said that hospital security phoned them the following day, asking what the name of the towing service, that towed Elsabe’s car, is.
“The vehicle was driven in and out of the main gate, how do they supervise?”
The News understands that security guards do ask visitors and to open their car boots upon entering and exiting the hospital.
Elsabe told the News that she feels unsafe to visit the hospital because dark areas provide for possible criminal activity, even if her family is dependable on state health services.
Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, said that a parking lot will now be allocated in the front of the hospital at night “until all the lights are fixed”.
“We regret this unfortunate incident. The matter is currently being attended to by the South African Police Service, the Private Security Management and the owner of the vehicle,” he said.
