Mall of Africa: locals to stick to local malls

Thousands of shoppers flocked to the newly opened mall this morning, causing heavy traffic around Midrand.

The Mall of Africa officially opened its 26 entrances to the public today (28 April), but Krugersdorpers say local malls are enough.

In a poll on Facebook, Peter Walker said: “Now why would I want to go to a mall in Midrand when they sell the same stuff at my local mall? Whatever so called savings I make will be pated out for petrol and toll fees.”

Danie Dyira Katanda said: “What’s in Midrand that’s not at Clearwater or Cradlestone? Half the people there are pickpockets and robbers anyway. No thank you.”

Ann Mackaydavies said: “Not going to see me there. I hate shopping centres at any time.”

Mandy Proctor said: “Definitely will only go when it’s calmed down.”

Located in Midrand, the Mall of Africa has a project value of R5b, eNCA reported.

eNCA reported that the mall, as the biggest retail centre on the continent, is expected to accommodate over 300 stores. Some of the stores, such as Zara Home, H&M, Armani Exchange, Pizza Hut and Starbucks, are relatively new to South Africa.

The mall will have dedicated Uber pick-up points and free Wi-Fi.

On Twitter, users said Gauteng has come to a standstill this morning as thousands of shoppers queued from 6am, waiting for the shops to open.

The mall’s trading hours will be from 9am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 8pm.
