As petrol goes up, locals say buy cheaper

Krugersdorpers weigh in on how you can help your budget not take another knock.

The petrol price, for all grades of petrol, will increase by 12 cents per litre as of midnight tonight and locals say downgrading to cheaper products might help keep your budget in tow.

The Department of Energy said the price of diesel will however dip by one cent per litre for 0,05 percent sulphur and two cent per litre for 0,005 percent sulphur.

With fuel prices hiking every so often, consumers believe that shopping for the cheaper product could be the solution to keep your budget balanced.

In a poll on Facebook, Krugersdorpers said that it is a good idea to start looking for specials and deals when shopping.

Eurard Roode said you can get rid of “luxuries” first.

“Like DStv, drinking, smoking and buy cheaper cuts of meat. If you have all these things it could easily add over R1 000 to your budget. Make sure your car really needs 95 (UPL) and not 93 (UPL). Also do a single run to do grocery shopping, and then force yourself to make it last because trips to the shop every week can easily add up,” he said.

Thabiso Tsobane said you can find a means to additional income.

“We all have God given gifts that can easily bring in money to subsidise our income.”

But some Krugersdorpers had more interesting ideas. Kylie Douglas said that paying the bills is like playing a game.

“You play a game, which bills do we let slide this month. Next month it’s the other bills’ turn, that way no one feels left out and you get to have a nice, in depth conversation when people phone you for money.”

The Automobile Association (AA) expects more fuel increases during May.

The AA recently said a steady appreciation in international petroleum prices during April “has brushed aside gains in the Rand-US dollar exchange rate, setting the stage for more fuel price hikes in May”.

“We forecast steady rises in the price of fuel in South Africa in the short to medium term, with the possibility of larger spikes if the Rand comes under pressure,” the AA said on their website.
