Drug free campaign being launched
The community of Krugersdorp is invited to the launch which aims to change the face of the town's drug hubs.
Local Krugersdorp resident and founder of Asilweni Cleaning Streets will be launching the X-Rated Drug Free House Campaign in Sivewright Street this coming weekend.
This campaign will launch on 14 May and is aimed at eradicating substance abuse and human trafficking as well as help eliminate drug houses in communities.
“Last year alone Social Development spent R20 million on rehabilitation centers. This money should have been used in other things to build the nation. We aim to revamp, reunite reintegrate and rebuild communities,” Cherlyn Tshabangu from Asilweni Cleaning Streets said.
She believes that most of the drug hubs have been displaced and isolated from the community and the crime in these areas are not being reported as they should.
“We are launching this campaign in Sivewright Street because it has become a drug and human trafficking hub in the province. The community and businesses in the area have been affected by the crime increase. Sadly people have become prone to live among traffickers, drug dealers and criminals.”
So far Cherlyn and her team have managed to close two alleged drug houses without the assistance of local police but rather with the help of the rightful owners of the properties and the help of Mogale City Local Municipality.
Cherlyn is also asking the community to play a part in her initiative by donating various products such as food, parcels, clothing, furniture and toiletries which will be used in their outreach programs.
“We are seeking support from local businesses, the municipality, police, community safety forums and all other organisations to take hands and fight for change.”
The launch will kick off on the corner of Vlei and Sivewright Streets where she will take residents on a tour through the slums.
Keynote speakers will address residents after which members of the community can visit various stalls from 9am to noon on 14 May.
