[PHOTOS] Meet Mr and Mrs Jones

News journalist Marizka Coetzer ties the knot!

What do you get when you bring together some vintage flair, creative thinking and a collection of antiques?

You get the utterly charming, yet mildly eccentric Mr and Mrs Steven Jones.

News journalist Marizka Coetzer recently tied the knot with Steven Jones, an electrician and avid antiques collector, who is not only her partner, but also the one person who encourages her to be her authentic self.

It all started in 2012 when Marizka, who loves all things vintage and is without a doubt the News’ most unconventional and creative journalist, visited her mom at her workplace. In walked the man with the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen. Marizka knew it was up to her to make the first move.

"He has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen," Marizka said about her husband, Steven Jones.

“I sent him a message on Facebook and waited for his reply. A few weeks later we had our first date … at McDonald’s! We never stopped chatting,” a giggling Marizka said.

A month later the two made it official and became a couple. They were living in Chancliff, madly in love and a little over a year later, they conceived their daughter, Amber Abigail Jones.

“She is a Valentine’s Day baby and she is the love of our lives.”

About the day Steven – or Steve Speedcop Jones as she calls him – asked her to marry him, Marizka said he was sitting on his mother’s stoep in East London, busy working on a drill. It was Christmas eve of 2013.

“He said he knew the setting was not romantic, but he went down on his one knee and asked me to be his wife. I though it was the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me. I said yes.”

Fast forward almost three years later, and literally a month before the pair said “I do”, Marizka realised she needed to start planning their wedding.

“We jokingly said we are getting married on 14 May and when I looked on the calendar a month before, it hit me, I was getting married in four weeks.”

The weeks flew by and on the icy cold autumn day, with pouring rain outside, Marizka walked down the isle with her father while Steve and Amber were waiting in front.

It was an intimate ceremony, held at their favourite venue Die Boomhuisie. Shortly before 4pm, Pastor Mark Brooks pronounced them husband and wife.

“It was beautiful and everything I thought it would be; thank you to everyone who played a role, you all know how much you mean to me.”

The rest of the News team as well as all her friends and colleagues at Caxton West Rand wish the happy couple a long and prosperous life together.
