Suspect spills the beans after getting caught
A neighbour tackled the suspect who was fleeing on foot and placed him under citizen arrest.
A fleeing suspect, who was caught by a vigilant resident, spilled the beans on why he was trying to steal a vehicle in the area.
A silver Fiat Palio, occupied by four suspects, was travelling along Bantry Street during the afternoon of 26 May. The vehicle stopped, one suspect climbed out, and proceeded to the vehicle he was planning to steal.
When neighbours heard the commotion caused by the suspect who was attempting to break into the vehicle, they quickly ran out and gave chase, following him towards Dublin Street.
Meanwhile, a motorist travelling along Longford Street was almost hijacked by the remaining suspects in the Fiat. Fortunately, he acted swiftly, drove round the Fiat and got away.
At this point, the suspects in the Fiat, and the fourth suspect, who was still on foot, all headed into Dublin Street. The suspect took a left turn while the Fiat took a right turn.
One of the neighbours caught up with the suspect, tackled him and placed him under citizen’s arrest.
Shortly after that, patrollers from the Sector 7 Community Policing Forum, reaction officers from Dowry and ADT, and Mogale City Traffic Department officials arrived at the scene, followed by members of the local police.
While they were waiting for the police, a reaction officer questioned the suspect who explained that they’d received an order for the vehicle he was trying to steal from a chop-shop in Dobsonville earlier that day.
“It just goes to show again how a community that stands together and who are willing to help each other can achieve these tasks. One less criminal on our streets thanks to the teamwork of the community. The two-way radio system used by the CPF proves to be the most efficient means of getting help, and I would like to urge all the residents to join their local Sectors,” Ramon Collins said.
