Model aircraft take to the sky

Model aircraft enthusiasts spent Youth Day painting the sky with their beautifully coloured planes.

The Snoopy Flying Club hosted its Winter Air Show on Youth Day, when it displayed various model aircraft and showcased the aerobatic skills of its members.

This is the first time the club has hosted a winter air show, but they are planning to make this an annual event. The club has 65 members who fly models that range from start-ups to 50 per cent scale models.

Geoff Dale, the chairperson of the club for the last five years, says the show achieved more than they expected and had a turnout of about 150 people.

The models on display included warbirds, aerobatic planes, helicopters, gliders and jets, to name just a few, and their pilots were eager to show off their skills. The weather was perfect for flying, and the day was enjoyed by everyone who attended the event.

The members fly their models every weekend at the old Millsite railway siding, which lies between Randfontein and Krugersdorp.
