Locals make great strides on Youth Day

People of all ages and different athletic clubs came together on Youth Day to celebrate the youth of 1976 with a fun-run and walk.

The Kagiso Striders Athletic Club hosted a fun-run at the Kagiso Sports Complex on Youth Day.

The event was created to commemorate the youth of 1976 and consisted of a 5km, a 10km and a 21km fun-run and walk.

“In the past, we travelled out of the West Rand to compete in other races. This year, we decided to create our own race. One of our goals is to follow in the footsteps of the Comrades Marathon and create the Mogale Marathon,” said club spokesperson Dithapelo Tumane.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), Fat Cats, Remmogo and Central Gauteng Athletic Clubs were among the more than 500 participants.

The event was held in partnership with the Mogale City Local Municipality, which provided the venue and traffic control. A local radio station, Mogale FM, helped with publicity.

Colonel Hein Gerber from the Gauteng SAPS Club said that their team hosts a monthly run, and chose the Youth Day run for the month of June, because of its significance.

“We had about 30 members taking part in the race from different police stations around Gauteng including Krugersdorp and Kagiso,” he told the News.

The Striders Youth Day run is an annual event and anyone wishing to participate in it can contact the club’s chairperson Dithapelo Tumane on 082 7372 537 or visit the club’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/kagisostridersGallery.
