Strawberry moon coincides with winter solstice

The next time the full moon will coincide with the winter solstice is in the year 2062.

For the first time in almost 50 years, a full moon coincided with the winter solstice. This will not happen again until the year 2062.

The winter solstice is the day on which the southern hemisphere experiences its shortest day and longest night of the year, while the northern hemisphere experiences its summer solstice with the longest day and shortest night.

This year, the winter solstice occurred at 00.34am on the morning of Tuesday, 21 June, and those who were awake to see it experienced something of pure beauty.

South Africa’s summer solstice will take place on Wednesday, 21 December at 12.44 pm.
