A partnership between two sectors of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) saw a number of homeless street-dwellers made warm for the night.
A Sector 3 member, who is also the owner of Defcon Security, worked with the Sector 3 and 4 CPFs in a joint venture to collect blankets for the homeless of Krugersdorp. Members of both sectors met in the parking lot of Key West Shopping Centre where the blanket drive kicked off on 17 June.
First off, the Sector 3 Chairperson, Piet Sparks welcomed all the members, emphasising that it is not only important for the CPFs to be involved in their respective communities but also for them to get to know each other and work together.
The members of the sectors had an opportunity to get to know one another over a hot cup of soup and bread before hitting the road.
By this time, the News had received word that the Tower of Life Shelter in Rissik Street was already packed to capacity for the night, leaving many other homeless people with no choice but to sleep on the streets.
The CPF members were divided into groups and sectors and then drove through the streets of Krugersdorp where they handed out 40 blankets, cups of soup and bread to the unfortunates who had nowhere to go for shelter.
The patrollers were shocked to find a number of homeless people sleeping in manholes.
“When we go out on the street at night, we realise that we are quick to complain yet we do not know how fortunate we truly are,” said Wilma Nel, one of the Sector 3 patrollers.
