As winter reaches its peak, the risk of veld and house fires becomes a harsh reality.
In order for farmers to prevent veld fires from destroying all their hard work, they burn firebreaks. Firebreaks are burnt strips of veld that are created in a controlled manner to act as barriers during veld fires.
The farmers in the Kromdraai area are set to start burning their firebreaks this week, but there is no reason to be alarmed or panic if you see fire in the distance, as it will be under control.
In addition to the local fire department, residents also have access to the almost 300 Working on Fire (WoF) veld fire firefighters who have been stationed at 12 bases across Gauteng.
We urge our readers to be careful this fire season, and to report any uncontrolled fires to the Krugersdorp Fire Department on 011 660 7750.
