Excel Champ of South Africa

Corne van Heerden, a Krugersdorp resident, is Microsoft’s South African Excel Champ.

In March this year, Microsoft announced the start of an exciting international Excel Championship competition, and on 27 May the South African final was held.

A rumour, that a World Championship will be hosted later this year, has been doing the rounds, but it’s yet to be confirmed.

Corne van Heerden, a Microsoft Certified Professional and Trainer, first saw an article on the competition on Linkedin, and investigated further.

78 successful entries were submitted, and the candidates had to complete four challenges, each of which included a variety of different Excel functionalities. Everything, from sorting and cleaning data, to advanced analysis, charting, macros and formulas, was tested. The successful finalists were thus all highly-experienced Excel users who had encountered a variety of Excel functionalities. And Corne walked off as the South African winner!

“I’ve been enjoying the bragging rights. It’s nice to be able to say I am the best at something that so many people use every day in their workplace. It has also brought a lot of prestige to our company, Companion ICT Training, because we can now officially say that if you come for training with us, you are being trained by Microsoft’s South African Excel Champ,” he said.
