Residents angry over new “illegal” taxi rank
Mogale City Public Safety shut down an "illegal" taxi rank that was situated in an open space.
The taxi owners of Krugersdorp found a new home in Kagiso and commuters were not happy about it.
Numerous commuters took to social media to voice their frustrations about not being informed about the sudden move to a different place.
They also complained that the new rank is too far away and that getting there is troublesome, and is causing them to be late for work in the mornings.
The News spoke to the Greater Krugersdorp Taxi Association‘s public relations officer (PRO), Patrick Matolo, who emphasised that the decision to create a new taxi rank was made by the Krugersdorp District Taxi Union (Kruditu) and not the GKTA.

“A taxi rank can never be moved. Commuters were not consulted about this decision and the Greater Krugersdorp Taxi Association was not involved,” Matolo said. He stated further that setting up a new taxi rank in an open space was illegal, because you need legal documentation for such a move.
In recent developments, the News learned that the Mogale City Public Safety Department has shut down the new taxi rank.
“Kruditu did not meet with the community before they created a new rank. They were told to evacuate that space by Mogale City Municipality and Public Safety because they were not legal. They did not have a permit giving them access to that space and the Municipality had already given them a rank in Krugersdorp,” Jack Lethlage, the assistant to GKTA’s PRO, said.
The News tried to contact the spokesperson of Kruditu, to no avail, and is still awaiting a response from the Mogale City spokesperson.
