Mathematician gives the gift of numbers
Motekematics provides extra maths lessons to disadvantaged learners and aims to prove that anyone can pass maths.
It is a known fact that many students struggle with mathematics although a maths pass is a requirement for many careers. Senior mathematician, Phoenix Moteke has made an attempt to solve that problem with Motekematics, an educational project that provides professional tuition to high school and tertiary learners.
“I do not just offer maths lessons – I offer a mathematical development course that caters for learners who are struggling with mathematics, those who wish to brush up their knowledge and those who wish to achieve distinctions,” Phoenix told the News.
Based in Kagiso, Motekematics has been providing one-on-one, and group, lessons for one hour every week since 2002. During the lessons, Phoenix clarifies the structure of mathematics by explaining every single step without complicating it.
Phoenix hopes to see more learners pass mathematics and aims to eradicate the stigma attached to mathematics because he believes that maths is nothing more than a challenge.
“Any learner can pass maths, all it takes is some dedication and everything will come together like a symphony,” he told the News.
He has dreams of opening more tuition centres in the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) although he is unable to achieve that right now.
The dedicated former maths teacher lists political science, contemporary philosophy and of course, mathematics as his passions. He has made his services available to anyone who needs extra help with mathematics at no cost, because he believes that everyone can excel in the field of mathematics .
“If you are dedicated, you can pass mathematics. Your teachers may tell you that you can’t pass, but hard work pays off. Do not be afraid to ask for help and don’t let your teacher’s opinion become your reality,” he said.
Teaching people from different backgrounds about mathematics must not be easy, especially since the subject is already known for being difficult but that does not bother Phoenix at all.
“I encourage learners to take maths and science as part of their subject choices. Both of those subjects open doors and guarantee better career prospects,” he told the News.
