Video: High-tech cameras will now keep an eye on Krugersdorp crime
Automated number plate and facial recognition cameras form part of the BPF’s wider 12-month plan to improve public safety across Krugersdorp.
Krugersdorp’s Business Policing Forum (BPF) has launched the Krugersdorp City Improvement Plan (KCIP) to strengthen surveillance and public safety in the CBD.
The programme was officially unveiled on August 14 and includes surveillance cameras with automated number plate and facial recognition technology, aimed at assisting law enforcement and reducing crime.

According to BPF chairperson Tony Dobson, the cameras are only one part of a larger 12-month plan that will also include city ambassadors, an intersection safety initiative and a cleaner streets programme.

“Krugersdorp stands at a decision point,” Dobson said, adding that the BPF aims to become a fully operational partner in the city’s safety and development.

Within its first day, the KCIP flagged six individuals and 3 358 vehicles. The system can also assist with predicting traffic flows, identifying maintenance needs and supporting enforcement.
The BPF plans to expand the KCIP to other parts of Krugersdorp and is encouraging businesses to get involved.
