On this day in History: Jani Allen was born

Jani Allen was voted 'the most admired person in South Africa' in 1987.

On Thursday, 11 September 1952, Jani Allen was born.

She made a name for herself as a columnist for the Sunday Times between 1979 and 1989. Her work became so popular that she was voted ‘the most admired person in South Africa’ in 1987.

Her close relationship with Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) leader Eugène Terre’Blanche was also highly publicised.

After an assassination attempt on her life in 1989, she fled to London. She left the Sunday Times and began working for Scope magazine. In 1996 she returned to South Africa and began working as a radio broadcaster for Cape Talk Radio.

She currently lives in the United States where she is writing her memoirs.
