Today in History: Documents on Transkei’s independence, including a non-aggression pact, are signed.
A non-aggression pact is a national treaty between two or more states in which the signatories promise not to engage in military action against each other.
On Friday, 17 September 1976, a total of 65 documents on the establishment of the oldest of the independent homelands, the Transkei, were signed.
The documents were signed in Pretoria by the then Prime Minister, BJ Vorster, and Chief Kaiser Matanzima. Among them was a non-aggression pact, designed to come into force upon independence on 26 October 1976.
The Transkei became the first of the independent homelands to gain complete independence under the policy of separate development.
At its opening session, the Transkei National Assembly elected Paramount Chief Botha J Sigcau as the Transkei’s first President and Kaizer Matanzima as Prime Minister.
