Two minors injured in scholar transport accident

One 10-year-old and one 13-year-old were taken to hospital after two scholar transport vehicles crashed into each other.

Two vehicles crashed into each other on the corner of Cetshwayo and Phatudi Streets, Kagiso this morning, leaving two minors injured.

Emergency services and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

The vehicles were both transporting children to school at the time of the accident. Some of the children were on their way to Hoërskool Die Adelaar, Princess Primary School and Culembeeck Primary School. Eyewitnesses on the scene said that both drivers were in the wrong – one of them skipped a stop street while the other was speeding.

Adult scholar patroller in the area, Lydia Mokgosi, had some concerns about the intersection.

“Motorists do not stop even though there is a visible stop sign and they do not listen to me as a scholar patroller when I tell them to slow down,” she told the News.

One of the vehicles was overloaded, carrying more than 20 children in a vehicle that should only carry 13 passengers.

Two schoolchildren aged 10 and 13 respectively were hospitalised.
