Night race hosted for disabled a runaway success

It is one of our most heart-warming projects in both the running and disabled community.

Once a year, the Krugersdorp Lions Club, with assistance from the Khosa Running Club, arranges a very special road race for both children and adults with various disabilities.

This event is always met with smiles all round – from the organisers, to the people driving past, to the runners assisting. The biggest smiles, however, came from the children and adults participating in the race which took place on 12 October.

The contestants run a distance of approximately two kilometres on foot or in wheelchairs pushed by runners from the Khosa Running Club. At the finish line they get a medal, some cold-drink, a boerewors roll and a packet of sweets to take home. The medals are immediately hung around their necks and proudly paraded to anyone who will acknowledge their achievement.

Approximately 150 people with disabilities from Gateway Village, Gateway School, Logwood Village, the West Rand Association for People with Disabilities (WRAPD) and the West Rand Cerebral Palsy School participated in the race this year.

“This event has been held for approximately 20 years and huge thanks needs to go to Khosa Club Running Club for making it possible.

“This is a highly anticipated event for many of the runners. Some of them have already participated for several years and will continue to do so in years to come. It is one of our most heart-warming projects,” said Ivan du Plooy, the current President of the Krugersdorp Lions Club.
