Police chase down card thief
The suspect took the complainant's card, allegedly pretended to insert it and then asked the complainant to punch in his pin code.
A 28-year-old suspect was arrested after he tried to steal a complainant’s bank card in the Chamdor area.
The complainant was allegedly withdrawing money from a shopping centre’s ATM in Jacob Street, Chamdor on Wednesday, 26 October. He was allegedly struggling to insert the card into the ATM when an unknown male suddenly appeared and offered to assist him. The suspect took the complainant’s card and allegedly pretended to insert it. He asked the complainant to punch in his pin code.
When no further instructions came up on the ATM screen, the complainant decided to cancel the transaction.
The suspect then allegedly took the card and ran from the scene. A member of the public alerted security and the guards chased after the suspect. Kagiso Police also appeared on scene.
They cornered and apprehended the suspect soon after. The suspect was found to be possession of other cards as well.
The suspect is being detained at the Kagiso Police Station and will appear in court on charges of theft soon.
The Kagiso police would like to invite any member of the public whose bank card was stolen in a similar manner to report it to their nearest police station.
“We want to warn people to be more vigilant, especially in this season,” said Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya,
the spokesperson for the Kagiso police. “People must never allow strangers to assist them at ATMs,” he added
