Elderly woman’s killer finally convicted

After nearly five years the murderer of an 83-year-old woman was finally convicted by Judge Motlhatseng. Alfred Morane was sentenced to 50 years’ imprisonment by the Palm Ridge High Court after being found guilty of viciously murdering the elderly woman and robbing her of various items.

Morane, the gardener of the household, attacked the woman he worked for in her house in Monument, Krugersdorp in 2011. He severely assaulted her before tying her up in her house. He then ransacked the house and took firearms, cellphones, money and other valuable property. Morane disappeared without a trace after his crimes.

Warrant Officer Holder was assigned to the case and could not put the horrific murder of the defenceless woman to rest.

Holder dedicated five years to finding the suspect and finally located him in a Johannesburg prison. Morane was serving time for another crime under a different identity.

Holder managed to link the accused to the crime he committed in 2011. On 5 September, Morane was charged with murder and made a full confession of his crimes two days later.

Holder was extremely pleased to see the murderer being convicted after so many years.

Brigadier Baloyi, Krugersdorp Police station commander applauded Holder’s outstanding effort and perseverance, and for finally securing his conviction.

“One murderer off the streets is a big achievement,” Baloyi said.
